Working principle
Acid-washed coconut shell activated carbon is produced by treating virgin coconut shell-based carbon with a diluted acid solution—typically hydrochloric acid (HCl) or phosphoric acid—followed by thorough rinsing with deionized water. This acid-washing process serves two critical functions. First, it effectively removes soluble inorganic impurities, metal oxides, and acid-soluble ash constituents that are naturally present or introduced during the activation process. Second, it neutralizes any residual alkali compounds on the carbon surface. The treatment also modifies the surface chemistry by increasing the concentration of oxygen-containing functional groups (e.g., carboxyl and hydroxyl groups), which enhances the carbon's hydrophilic character and its affinity for polar adsorbates. Additionally, the acid rinse opens up clogged micropores by dissolving mineral deposits, thereby improving the accessibility of the internal pore structure for target molecules.
